To change the rego, I have to get a "safety Inspection". The interesting thing is that new trailers, even home made ones, don't need a safety inspection. There is some other inspection that both old and new trailers get. There you go.
Details of the canoe trailer are:
Width = 2500mm
Total length = 5150mm
Length of the box part = 2600mm
Tare = 250kg (This would be the weight of the empty trailer) (you knew that didn't you)
Aggregate Trailer Mass = 1500kg
OK So what are the rules?
We are less that 4.5tonnes aggregate Trailer mass so it looks like this applies:

In light of the review of the document, I need to add.... maybe lights and reflectors.
A trip to supercheap shows the cheapest reflectors at about $9 a pair and the cheapest lights at about $10 each. So it will be worth rereading the regs to see how few lights we can get away with. The
13.1 Front Position (side) lamps
| Presence: Must be fitted if a trailer is more than 1600 mm wide and over 4 metres long, or over 1800 mm wide. | we are 2500 wide so this applies |

Arrangement: At the front and the rear. See Figure 1. If a trailer has no structure at the front and at the rear to which lamps can be attached (such as a boat trailer), then one combination white (or amber) /red end-outline marker lamp midway on each side may be fitted instead |
We are 2500 wide so this applies. I guess we do have structure (even though it is removable I can't be bothered to remove it for the inspection) |
13.8 Side-Marking (Marker) Lamps
