Multicam

The date is wrong - Not sure when this was originally written

Multicam is the ability for a video editing program to injest video from multiple cameras that have all recorded the same event.  Then to facilitate editing.  It would seem that one of the drivers for the development of multicam is the creation of the GoPro sports cameras.  Young guns with GoPro's will swarm and each record their view.  I guess later they get together and do some editing.

In my case I record things like school plays and church choirs using a minimum of two cameras.  A fixed wide shot and close ups.  Sometimes additional cameras giving alternative views and funky angles.

There are two key features required in the editing program.

  • A method to assist in lining up the recordings.  This seems to primarily be done by the program looking at the audio tracks and lining up on the audio.
  • A way of displaying multiple pictures on the screen at the same time.
Programs That do Multicam
Not a lot I am afraid.  The front runners are on Apple
Final Cut Pro

Fudging MultiCam on Serif MovieplusX6
I use Serif MoviePlus X6 to edit video.  Because
  • It's easy to use,
  • low cost,
  • Creates low res cache files on the disk - this means I can edit AVCHD on my laptop with the footage on an external USB hard drive with no pauses and glitches when I am editing.  The final result is of course HD.
  • Can scale, rotate individual clips - Handy to fix a misaligned tripod or create a picture in picture.
  • As a bonus they have a forum where one can get help and the people there are quite sociable.
But  it does not do multicam.
To fudge multicam I can use the transform function to change the scale and position of the video on each track to create a multiview effect.
Then edit - realising that as I cut out bits you get this strange effect of quarters of my screen coming and going.  I am still not sure if the idea is worth it.
Then when I have all these peices all over the time line, I need to go back and reset the properties to full screen.

To do this
Download & Install this free windows keyboard recorder and replay program -  Autohot key http://www.autohotkey.com/
