50 Shades same story line as Pretty Woman
Megan and I watched Pretty Woman movie last night. The story line is very similar to 50 shades.
Rich & Powerful male. Runs companies. Has relationship issues.
Rich male takes girl for private flight.
Rich male wants woman but does not want to give her emotional connection.
Woman does not get sucked in by his wealth but maintains her independence.
Woman leaves at or near the end. In Pretty Woman they get back together at the end in a feel good Hollywood ending. In 50 shades, we hang out for a sequel - marketing coup?

BGS rowing lunch
The 2015 rowing season is over. This year Chris rowed 6 seat in the first eight and Dan was cox of the Grade 9 3rd Quad.
The first eight is the elite crew of the school and it was a privilege for Chris and another boy Paddy to secure seat in that crew. Seats were selected and reselected competitively several times through the season.
Sadly the first eight only managed 5th place at the head of the river. Initially a few negative feelings as they had put in so much hard work training. At the lunch I felt sorry for Chris as the only member of this crew who did not take away something. The grade 12 members of the crew received a mug and Paddy received an award for 'most improved'.
The highlight of the first eight year was winning at the Churchie regatta. This was very exciting and the first win of a BGS first eight in years.
Dan's crew also did not win but I hope that if Dan sticks with it that he will both learn a lot about leadership and also contribute greatly to the crew. Through my own rowing, I have learned the value of a good cox.
The lunch was held at the convention centre. As we walked from the car park, we saw this directional sign. Seemed appropriate.
Seating - Boys were seated in crews and parents were seated separately in year levels. Having an "Open" grade 11 boy and a grade 9 boy meant we had divided loyalties and elected to sit on a grade 11 parents table.
The lunch included the usual array of speakers and presentations for performance.
The meal was alternate drop Beef / Pork with 2 vegies. I felt the Beef was underdone and Chris thought the beef was dry. Chris likes his meet rare and I like medium well done so I suspect if we had swapped meals we would have given "BEC" a better mark for food. The general consensus was that the Pork was the better meal.
School luminaries included:
Mr McCalif - Head Master
Mark Brusasco
Ron Cochraine
Joe Rodriguez.

2015 GPS Head Of The River - Video
I ran a live camera from the finish line back to the Parents tent and the supporters tent.
The finish tower gets very crowded and so I built a cantilevered tripod mount. This put my camera about 30cm out from the tower. Enough to let me look upstream without being snookered by the other camera operators or the commentator (Who gets pride of place at the front of the queue).
Just to the right of the fellows head you can see the microwave link dishes that send the pictures back to the supporters.
For the head we had two links going back. A 10GHz analogue link that provided a no delay option and a trial using a 5.8GHz digital (ubiquity) link running a HTTP connection.

Comedy Festival at the Powerhouse
Went to the Power House last night. Met up with Bob, Jenny & Kahren. A light dinner and drinks on their riverside deck. I had a very nice meal of ribs and a piece of Bob's pizza.
Bout a glass of wine that was noticeably small in wine content.
We had quite an animated discussion about 50 shades of grey which was fun. This is a movie that I had seen and was surprised by. In my case, unlike the glass of wine it had exceeded expectations. The others though were not impressed. As I recall it, I think one of their points was that the very existence of the movie would make BDSM concepts visible to young people. Other points were that it was degrading to women or that it legitimized hitting women. The comment was made that if it had been set in a trailer park then it would have been an episode of CSI.
my detailed thoughts are here in a blog posting of a previous time.
8:15 we decamped to go see the show. This was held in the rooftop ? room. One of their smaller performance spaces. As with any art it appealed to some and less to others.
Personally I did not find the show funny. Interesting social comment - yes but made me laugh - no.
As with most comedians he seemed to be unable to string more than 3 words together unless he threw in a swear word. An excuse? Later we discussed some of his body language that seemed to imply some uncertainty or lack of confidence. Scratching his tummy, loosing his place and having to refer to notes, ????
Social comment included reference to gay relationships, isis and some naive recruits who buy "Islam for dummies" at the airport on their way to join isis.
I suspect the lack of humor was that perhaps the fellow is dealing with some personal deamons. Breaking up with his wife/partner. He has a kid.
Drugs, gay relationships,.....
To me for something to be funny it needs an unexpected twist. A build up of tension and a sudden unexpected release at the end. This show did not have that.
I do not regret going. Actually one of my concerns is that maybe I will not be invited to such things because the asker may be worried that I will not like the event that I am being invited to. I very much liked the evening. I enjoyed the meal, the company, the experience of the show. (Simply did not find it funny).

Dinner
Chris Thomson not being photogenic trying to bulk up with steak and potatoes. Chris seemed to be in contact with someone by phone and the topic was "bulking up". Now that phones seem to have appeared at the table it seemed reasonable to post to the venerable facebook.
A
Interstingly Megan Thomson kept insisting "no phones at the table " and then checked hers when a text came in. That prompted Daniel Thomson to pull out his phone and Jemma to ask when she is getting a phone.
