The courier mail lapping up the stuff that dribbles out of the police media unit. A story telling us what we already know and that is that it is not all about that nasty speed thing.
According to the CM,
Speed 18%
Drink driving 16%
Fatigue 14%
Not wearing seat belts 13%
And now illegal manouvers 25%
One quarter of deaths and they have only new worked out why.
Um er we could be firgiven for thinking they know what they are doing.
What about the other 14 percent?
Keeping that for a slow news day. Or when we need to pull out another pointless surprise to criminalise normal people.
Do you know how many people were killed on Queensland roads in 2011? Tens of thousands you might think given the money, time and effort expended by our police and politicians. But you would be wrong. Not even 1000. 269.
Now I feel for the fanilies and friends if those who die or are injured. But perhaps on balance all this citizen bashing is just the cops flexing their power egos. Did I see a story about a girl who received $90k as a result of a cop repeatadly pulling her over? And did the cops prosecute the fellow? No she had to take the guy to court herself.
In this article, they have the usual paragraph from a distrought mother bemoaning the loss of her 17yo who died in a car cradh but with the CM's usual lack of depth, they do not tell us what causef the 17yo's death. Should we assume the kid was tired, drunk, not wearing a seatbelt and perfirming a U turn across double lines at night in fog, just over and crest? .
And a paragrapgh about a motor cyclist who was clocked at 210kmh. And get this
a) he survived and
b) they don't know who he is.
Two more interesting stories would be firstly of course, how many people actually travel over the speed limit and survive thus reminding us that speed is actually OK. Secondly how come the cops can't identify him anyway. Given their massive revenue and spend on technological resources.
Let us also remember that there are no references to the source of the data. How do us plebs verify it or even try to understand it given that even if the CM reporter did not mis quote it, we the dumb readers may well have misunderstood it.
