Gr10-4 training

Sponge stepped in to help coach today and he is going to coach Thursday.

The first focus was to get the blades off the water in the recovery.  Sponge did an exercise where they did 10 strokes then checked the boat but with blades flat on the water.

Then we focused on getting a definite tap out.  Explained that we understand there will be some instability but we'll come back and work on that.

Richard also wants the lean back and arms in more together .  I'd been keeping them quite distinct because that seemed the current mantra.  His logic was that by working them together you get a multiply effect of back plus arms to give a higher overall handle speed.  That translates to boat speed.

So the focus for the last week will be on the finish.

Interestingly when I'd spoken to Barnaby about what to focus on, he'd said the finish. Speed up the hands round the back turn ready for the last 500m.

Angus- lean back further.
James - pull up at the finish.
Louis - quick catch.
Zacar - best catches in the boat. Focus on finish. Lean back, big chest. Shoulders back.

Note that I've unintentionally coached them into the pause at the finish. Need to work on getting quick hands while in the sit back.

BGS 10-4quad training

After Saturdays two 3rd placing (their best yet) and complaints of sore backs, we kept the session a bit lighter than I would have otherwise liked. Just after the warm up, 2's rigger came loose.  James in 3 turned round to help re attach it.  We too the opportunity to take a silly picture.
Warm up
Row as 4.  Light catches , strong finish and then swap round to strong catch light finish and then a short sprint.
Then we did a small over rate piece.
The final bit was 26 full pressure from GPS to the mangroves then we had to do a U turn and come back for a picture.

Jemma's confirmation

When Jemma was baptised as a baby we made some promises on her behalf.

Last year she participated in a confirmation course at church. Now at age 12 she wished to make those and similar promises regarding faith in her own right.

Today we gathered at our friends the Mawhinney's house. Incidentally Erin Mawhinney is Jemmas God mother. And they have a pool. An essential ingredient because Jemma wished to reaffirm her baptism with a dunking.

Our minister, Janet, explained it was a reaffirmation and not a second baptism.

In a time and society where spirituality seems an awkward fit and we like to think we can somehow fit everything together like some giant logical provable scientific jigsaw, it was really moving to participate in something spiritual and intangible. I am very proud of you Jemma and I hope you continue to grow into a wonderful young lady.
