When Jemma was baptised as a baby we made some promises on her behalf.
Last year she participated in a confirmation course at church. Now at age 12 she wished to make those and similar promises regarding faith in her own right.
Today we gathered at our friends the Mawhinney's house. Incidentally Erin Mawhinney is Jemmas God mother. And they have a pool. An essential ingredient because Jemma wished to reaffirm her baptism with a dunking.
Our minister, Janet, explained it was a reaffirmation and not a second baptism.
In a time and society where spirituality seems an awkward fit and we like to think we can somehow fit everything together like some giant logical provable scientific jigsaw, it was really moving to participate in something spiritual and intangible.
I am very proud of you Jemma and I hope you continue to grow into a wonderful young lady.
