SATURDAY 30 SEPTEMBER 2023

SATURDAY 30 SEPTEMBER 2023
Couldn't be bothered to bring and set up a tent.
Slept on the couch in the hut.
Slept very well. Three wakeup to let Magnus out for a walk plus a few more just because I do wake but I was comfortable and the nice bit was not waking depressed.

Magnus seems to hurt her other back leg. Both Dan and I have examined it. Paul suggested maybe an ant bite.
Paul drove the Tesla into Stanthorpe and Ben drove it back.

FRIDAY 29 SEPTEMBER 2023

FRIDAY 29 SEPTEMBER 2023
3:45 arise. Fed cat and dog.
I'd not prepared last night so located clothes for rowing and work.
Rowing clothes were:
The white HOTY tee shirt,
Yesterday's undies,
Bike pants,
Mottly long sleeve jumper.

Work clothes:
Shorts sleeve check shirt,
Jeans,
Black sloppy Joe,
Socks
Undies
Brown leather shoes.
Brown belt

4:15am departed home for rowing.
Rowing crew
1 Will B
2 Rod
3 Frank
4 Michael M
5 Jenno
6 Neil A
7 Chris H
9 Maddie

The row was reasonably good. We did a simple warm up of just rowing as a full eight.

Then we did the "catch drill". This involves strike at the catch. Then place and let the water push the blade and then push. Not sure I am on board with the actual drill because of the strike at the catch bit. But I am on board with the idea of getting the oar in well before you push with the legs.

Then we did at full pressure
12 minutes Rate 20-22
Rest 2 min
14 min
Rest 2 min
16 min

I think requiring full pressure as distinct from 80%, was a good thing as it felt life everyone put in.

Boat is still quite tippy.
It would be nice to have someone in a tinnie coaching. Maddie does call some of us out but an outside view would be better. It makes it hard to square up early and get the oar in if the boat is unpredictable.

All in all though, it was a good row.

Coffee with the boys. The new CEO of Rowing Queensland had been invited along. Good to see proactive action on our clubs part.

Then I heard Phoebe was down the road at her gym so a second coffee was had with her.

Work-
Had to deal with the accountants remote access to the accounting system.

Then the movement activated lights job and the box had developed a melted bit. No idea how that could have occurred. But it will need to be rebuilt.

Off home,
Took shirts to the ironing people.

Packing

Loaded the dog.
Over to Dan's place. Loaded his swag which is very large.

4pm headed west.
Stopped in Aratula to give mags a walk and to change drivers. I was feeling very sleepy. Dan took over.
7 arrived euky Rd.

Nice home made burger for dinner.
Slept and apparently snored on the lounge room.

like father

Chilled out at home watching a Netflix movie: "Like Father". The essence of the story is a daughter reconnecting with her estranged father.

I was multi screening with YouTube on my phone.

At the end of the movie, of course, she changes her plans to go see her dad on the other side of the country.

Simultaneously, YouTube kicked onto the next song: Pink "just give me a reason".

A poignant line: "we can learn to love again"

Backing up and earlier in the day, I'd received a phone call from Scott and he'd asked if I was OK we'd arranged to meet at a pub next week. Later I received a call from Crafty asking if I was OK.

I was suspicious so I asked and Crafty told me they'd observed me leave breakfast after rowing in a hurry.

Atm I was in a good place but gee it was nice that people were looking out for me.

In fact I'd received a phone call from a friend who was down the street and I was going down to meet her for coffee.

Thursday filming

THURSDAY 21 SEPTEMBER 2023
Interestingly I was discussing with Matt about things one does to combat depression :
1. Write things to be grateful.
2. Look up, eyes open, smile (force if needed)
3. Be in the moment.

Then as I was driving to Tim's, I suddenly felt quite down. Flooded with feelings of resentment.  Bizarre.

I hear a song and for a while it becomes my goto song. Sometimes to complete a feeling and sometimes as a pull me up. Anyway today the theme from "cheers" began to run through my head. Some pertinent lines:
"Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got"
and
"Sometimes you want to go where
everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you came
You wanna be where you can see our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where
everybody knows your name"

Call sheet was:

Suicide Prevention Day

Turns out today is world suicide prevention day.

In QLD in 2021:-
813 suicides in QLD [1]
275 road deaths [2]
$237M in speeding fines[3]

Pardon my sarcasm...
FACEBOOK
Posted the above on FB. It will be interesting to see if FB shares it. I suspect it won't.

MUSINGS
My thought position is
1) When I person dies it's a personal tragedy but not a national tragedy.
2) We (government, public servants & most people) are too focused on safety.
3) Safety is used as an excuse to implement rules.
4) We are subjected relentlessly to the message that speed is terrible.
5) it's easy to make money out of speeding so they do. They put a ton of focus on it to justify making the money.
6) Far more people die from suicide than car accidents.
7) The government can't make money out of suicide or suicide prevention so not much focus.
8) I think the reduction in freedom brought about by our increasingly rule focused society is contributing to suicide.

Back to my FB post.
Essentially I don't think we should worry about the road toll because it's small and way smaller than the suicide rate. Plus I don't see it as a tragedy when someone dies and we should be able to legally have ourselves put down.

Dissention
I discussed this verbally with a friend who strongly disagrees with me. He pointed out that if someone close to him were to die out would totally rip him apart. I interpret that to mean that the negative consequences of death are personally very VERY significant and it's reasonable to put measures in place to minimise deaths.

FILM SATURDAY

SATURDAY 16 SEP
I'm amazed at how some people are able to roll and change - pivot - in response to changes outside of their control. The chief actress is delayed. The train cancelled. All disrupt things and yet some people just roll with it and either don't get stressed or don't let it show.

I found out quite draining.

There was a miscommunication with the cooking and so I ended up at the last minute buying sausages and salad.

Varieties in people's personalities and so on.

In the end they got some shooting done and in the end the call sheet went out

I was feeling tired / drained / frustrated and after sending the call sheet decided on retirement to bed.

Public Service and control NDIS

It feels to me that there's an abject failure of government to govern for the people. The post below highlights that in regard to the NDIS.

We've seen other examples such as robo debt and the abject failure of the government to provide affordable housing.

Keeping refugees locked up for years and years simply for wanting a better life.

It may seem trivial but closure of rock climbing places ostensibly in the name of safety but represents a depowering of individuals and an imposition of power and control by the public service.

I believe that somehow we need to change the attitudes of public servants from one of imposing control to one of listening, caring and acting ethically with a light touch. We need elected leaders to lead this and set rules to foster these outcomes. (renaming watch houses as youth detention centres to get around court decisions and and bypassing their own bill of rights is hardly ethical leadership by the QLD state government for example).

Some of the naughty statements about the NO campaign - secret documents for example fall into this and the whole No campaign seeks to, in my view, stifle and continue to disempower an already marginalised group and reflects the attitude of we-know-best and we'll impose that on you that pervades government and public service at all levels.

From Peter Gregory:-
Today I joined members of my community to witness the ceremonial final sitting of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. This has been a harrowing experience for many who boldly told their stories of failure at the hands of a disability care and support sector that promised to reform their ableist practices and ensure that all citizens with disabilities had opportunities for social and economic participation and choice and control. The NDIS and those implementing this have failed dismally to honour this promise. The Commissioners outlined their reflections on the stories of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation they have heard. Theses are practices that the NDIS and the Quality and Safeguards Commission were supposed to stamp out. These are the segregationist, manipulative and controlling behaviours Service Providers promised to reform. My community of friends who rely on these services for their very existence have been betrayed and lied to and the Royal Commission made that abundantly clear today. In the past 24hours a dear friend of mine was told by an arrogant NDIS Planner, that they have not met or spoken to, that it would be best for them to move into a group home with other disabled people they don’t know because it would be good for their socialisation. Group homes have been of particular interest to the Royal Commission, because of the undeniable evidence that they are incubators for abuse, neglect and exploitation. Another friend of mine was contacted by an NDIS Planner attempting to coerce them into an agreement that would have compromised their application to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal where they are seeking to overturn a decision of the NDIS.

I truly hope that the Royal Commission recommends root and stem reform of this corrupted system that bears no resemblance to the NDIS we advocated for.

I am also accutely aware that this event comes at a time of vitriolic speaches, misinformation and outright lies intended to erase the intergenerational trauma of colonisation experienced by out first nations people. The deliberate actions of some to undermine the opportunity for indigenous people to be recognised in the constitution and to provide advice on matters that affect them exposes a deep vein of resistance, that runs through our society, to addressing the profound impact of centuries of violence and neglect our first peoples have been subjected to. The deliberate strategy of some in this conversation to sow hate and fear through misinformation is a strategy, if it is allowed to succeed, that will have ramifications way beyond the demise of “The Voice” and its impact on our first nations citizens. It will be applied to all sectors of our community who dare to seek equal rights and are seen to disrupt the social conventions created by the powerful colonisers. The Disability Royal Commission has already heard reports that there are some agitators saying that the pursuit of disability rights is "infecting" and interfering with the lives of non-disabled people. They have been told that there is pushback from some sectors about the inclusion of disabled people in mainstream community activities and opportunities. The “we do not want you here” mentality so prevalent in the institutional era of disability care and support.

The German theologian Martin Niemöller, said at the close of World War 2

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

These are potent words, and a warning, to be pondered on this day as we witness the closure of the Royal Commission and the leadup to the referendum on an Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

Brisbane to Narrandera

The Tesla was going to take upwards of 18 hours. There are no charges on the Newell north of Moree so you have to go down the New England and then come across. The second problem is they are all non Tesla 50kW chargers. This means it takes an hour to charge 300km range VS a much more reasonable 20minutes from a Tesla supercharger.

Swapped the Tesla for Graham Thomas's Mazda CX5. It was just the thing although I suspect the torque converter is low on oil or something.

Picked up Anthony just after 4am and headed west. By good luck ended up on the Ipswich bypass going to Toowoomba. Took the new Toowoomba bypass which I'd never taken before.

Pie face petrol station somewhere near Millmerran. Worst bacon and egg toastie. Lots of warmed undercooked bacon. A microwave reheated egg like leather and two bits of bread who's Journey to staleness was only slightly accelerated by the toasting process. A couple of bites and into the bin.

Gave Anthony his first driving lesson. About 15 minutes.

Compensated with a bacon and egg mcmuffin and a coffee later.

DINNER
Roast pork with potatoe bake and veggies from the carvery at the shell coming into west Wyalong. That was just what I needed.

RUOK day

I did not see or hear any advertising this year.  On the way home from work I heard a comment on the radio.  Prompted me to look on Google and indeed it was.

Posted on FB:
"Turns out today was RUOK day."

Got a couple of sympathetic responses. In the mean time I'd been pondering....
Posted this response:
I ask myself all the time. Too often obviously. Am I OK? Not just do I feel OK but am I OK as in normal because something seems to be wrong with me.

Obsensibly I should be OK as in feel OK. I've a job and somewhere to live etc. A stack load better off than many people. I've got wonderful family and a great group of friends. I thank you all for your support. It's been fantastic.

But I still hurt. And I ask "am I normal"? Should I hurt this much? Maybe I'm  narcissistic (thinking only of myself).

I muse I've been monumentally unsuccessful in finding a new partner. Typically the most I manage is one date and then if I'm really lucky a text that says "sorry...".

It's not that I'm totally abnormal. It seems just there's something wrong with that sliver of personality that deals with intimate relationships.

Got some kind and thoughtful responses.

Tesla Autopilot Wiper Bug

Ahha my Tesla has a software bug.

When I push the gear selector stalk down to select cruise control, the wipers start. Slow at first then faster and faster until they attain warp speed.

The only way I could find to stop this was to tap the brake to take it out of cruise mode and then manually on the screen switch the wipers OFF.

Monday I reported it and got an appointment at the service centre for Wednesday. The tech at the service centre advised that its a known firmware bug and that engineers are working to fix it.

He then said that the more people who report it, the more attion it will get. Hmmm smells a bit like engineering back in the USA are not really taking this seriously. I look on Google and there are hits on this going back a couple of months so I suspect that it is the case that Tesla are not really trying to fix it.

I'm concerned that the windscreen will be scratched because it does not try to put water on it.

Also it would be nice to try out Autopilot.

The tech suggested manually washing the screen up near the cameras.

Creamy Vegitarian Pasta

I have to make a meal for some vegitarians.

The back up plan is to make a potato bake and salad.

Preference is to make a mushroom sauce and pasta

RESEARCH

https://biancazapatka.com/en/vegan-mushroom-pasta-with-spinach/

Ingredients 14 oz (gluten-free) pasta of choice (400 g)
3 tbsp olive oil
1 onion chopped
3 cloves of garlic minced 1
4 oz mushrooms (400 g) sliced 10,
5 oz baby spinach (300 g) fresh approx.
1/2 cup vegetable broth (or plant-based cream*)
1-2 tbsp soy sauce (optional) salt & pepper to taste
2 tsp lime juice (optional) parsley chopped (optional)

Topping:
pinch of smoked paprika
5 tbsp pine nuts vegan parmesan (optional)

Instructions Cook the pasta in salted water according to the package instructions.
Toast the pine nuts in a small pan without additional oil.
Then remove from the pan and set aside.
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet/ pan.
Add the mushrooms along with the onions and sauté for about 3 minutes until lightly browned.
Add the chopped garlic and cook for about 30 seconds longer.
Then deglaze with soy sauce and a bit of vegetable broth (or plant-based cream).
Reduce the heat and cook for about 1-2 minutes longer.
Add the spinach and cook for further 2-3 minutes until it has wilted.
Season with salt and pepper.
Optionally, add a splash of fresh lime juice, if you like.
Once the noodles are "al dente",
pour off the cooking water.
Put drained pasta to the mushrooms in the pan and toss to combine.
Add yeast flakes or vegan parmesan as desired and season with spices to taste again.
Serve the mushroom pasta with toasted pine nuts.
Bon appetit!

Notes
Instead of vegetable broth you can add plant-based cream or coconut milk,
if you want to make a creamy mushroom pasta.
You can also make your own pasta with this recipe for Homemade Pasta.

You can find this recipe here: https://biancazapatka.com/en/vegan-mushroom-pasta-with-spinach/ .

Brown snake and a dance

SATURDAY 9 SEPTEMBER
Rising around 4am and the cat had ascertained it was about to expire from starvation. Dog and cat fed.

First event was rowing in a race called the "Brown Snake Omnium". Now there's a word to keep to impress. On Friday, we'd abandoned our boats at Somerville. Saturday we launched there and rowed up just past Oxley Creek where we joined an armada sitting around waiting to start. It was a beautiful sunny day with cool air. Perfect for rowing. The race consists of four sub races with short breaks between. To me a great race as one gets a chance to recover but also put in some distance. Even though we won't break any records, it felt like a good row. The boat sat up reasonably and timing was pretty good and that sets the platform where one can actually put in the effort.

Next event was dancing. Bit like the brown snake in that one gets a break between dances. In the dance case it's for mental stress recovery as distinct to physical. Mind you it's getting a bit easier as the basic footwork is slowly being etched into my brain. Next I'll try to actually do it in time with the music. Thank you to Kelina and Belinda BeLeste Dance for partnering me.

One dance had randomised partners. They got every one up in two concentric circles then all the guys walked anti clockwise and the women clock wise. Walla random woman to get their toes and shinns attended to.

After my final dance, jumped in my car and high tailed it down to Jon Cafferky's birthday party. Recovered from both earlier stress makers with a couple of cold beers. Caught up with Jeff and Susie Clark .

Home. Dog was super pleased to see me. The cat reminded me of its impending demise. Dog and I walked for a bit to a food truck.

Back home and crashed....

Roast Lamb V3 2.8kg

2.8kg roast lamb
And 2.1kg

9pm into slow cooker.
Plus 1cup water.
On high
2am LOW
inspected. The meat swells a bit. Cut off a bit that was pushing the lid up. Turned heat to Low.

Went to bed
6am Jemma came over. Walked Magnus and Lucy then Jemma, Lucy and myself went for a run. Then coffee at the Oxley Cafe.
Went to work
3pm left work.
3:30 met Lewis and Clare at Glenrich st.
Lewis pealed potatoes.
4:00pm potatoes on at 150C (probably should be 180)
4:30 Added pumpkin and onion.
Turned up to 180
5:00 turned everything. Temp down to 170
Made white sauce
GRAVY: 6 table spoons gravox. Small amount of tap water to make paste. Then 2 and a bit cups boiling water. Later a couple of minutes in the microwave. Stir every 30 seconds.
Slow cooker to warm.
Cauliflower in microwave for 5 minutes.
Added Broccoli for a another couple of minutes.
5:30 served.

REVIEW
the two legs of lamb was just the right amount for 10 people.
Whole cauliflower and one and a half broccoli
5 potatoes and half a pumpkin
6 small onions. Each cut in half. Probably could have done a bit more.

Clare kindly set the table. I think this is the first time the table has ever had a table cloth. She also ventured into the garden and came back with flowers.
2:00 am update
Awake
Put on a load of washing
Packed clothes for Fri (remembering its the Trupp pub night)
Packed rowing kit
And most importantly unloaded and reloaded the dish washer.
Wiped benches.
There's still another load to go. The last load is saucepans.

TUE 5 SEP

Coached Mel & Graham. Took Phoebe for a ride in the tinnie.

Tesla wanted a form filled in and reminded me I needed 2 sets of keys. Cleaned out the Craptiva. Could not find either of the mechanical keys. Eventually phoned Dan who found one in my back pack.

Dan and Jemma came for tea.

Moved the craptiva remote access circuit boards to the Chinese housings. Both the official Holden housings and the new Chinese ones are equally poor quality but in different ways and internally slightly different.

Dan took the good Craptiva key and the two Chinese blanks to get Jai to cut them.

Zoom Audio Grief

Zoom is giving me grief.  I have a paid subscription.

I set up to host a meeting and when I started the meeting it would not let anyone use their device audio. Wanted everyone to dial in.

Closed the meeting and tried again. Same problem.

Then closed the meeting and another person started a new meeting with their ID and that meeting had normal audio. This means that the devices audio is working fine.

Later I deleted the android app and reinstalled it - same problem.  I have also tried on my PC and same problem.

There must be some weird default associated with my account.

How to fix this?

Fathers Day

I think I call it FU day.

While running park run yesterday I mused how someone who's role it is to cheer runners on, influences my mood and drive to keep running.

Fathers day, in my opinion, is a construct of the retail establishment to sell more stuff. So even more detached from my existence than the park run cheerier. BUT it does influence my emotions. Unfortunately.

No "fathers day" for me. Marcus and Chris are a long way away and Megan has  Dan and Jemma far away. Not unlike what occurrs at Christmas. I end up second fiddle.

Fathers day is a reminder of how fucked society is. More than half of marriages fail. Way more than half the kids do not live with their natural parents.  It highlights selfish human nature and most importantly that there is no forgiveness in this world.

For me personality it also reminds me how over emotional I am. Aloneness and loneliness.  I was just the banker and the sperm donor.

All in all its FU day.

Saturday 2-9-2023

 SATURDAY 2-9-2023

Lined up for park run in my new shoes. Cognisant that I'd done a training plod on Thursday morning that was not quite as dynamic as one would have liked. The main focus for me was to try to repeat last week's effort of not taking a walking break along the way.  Looked around for Nephew Peter but alas I think he'd slept in.
We were off and I noted that dogs seem to decide that after a good start they need to celebrate with a poo.  About the 1k mark, I was greeted with cheery "Hi" and young Peter whizzed by. No PB for him I reckon.

Plodded on. Past the Christians who I hoped were praying for me. Runner's coming the other way.  I try to put some spring in my step to make the running more efficient and focus on controlling my breathing. I know from rowing that if I don't control breathing then one ends up panting and I don't think that's efficient. I can hear the turn around and an effervescent young lady has music going and is clapping and smiling. It's interesting how that can spur one on even though this person does not know me.

Up ahead in the distance I see a shimmering sign.  This could be heaven but it feels like hell. Calves are aching and lungs are gasping. Peter joins me for the final straight. An interesting observation: I think, psychologically, the pacer should be beside you and just a couple of cm behind. If they get infront then it feels, for me anyway, like I'm defeated. Weird hay.

Not quite a PB at 37:45 compared to:
26 Aug 37:16 gold coast
19 Aug 39:07 rocks
29 JULY: Rocks riverside 00:38:20
Mid July: Coombs parkrun   00:40:44.

Then took a young friend of mine (Anthony) for a bit of learner driver practice and stopped on the corso for a coffee at the Somerville boat shed. There was a display highlighting the plight of the Palestinians. For me kind of topical atm as we lead up to the vote on the voice. A reminder that there are displaced and disempowered people all over the place and, in my view, we need to find ways to work together.

Took Magnus to Pet Barn at Jindalee for a nail trim $15 seemed good value to me.

Then over to visit Paul and Cybele.  Did some desensitisation with their dogs but Kept magnus on a short leash.

It's river fire tonight and fathers day tomorrow.  Need to be on guard emotionally as fathers day is FU day and saturday night has nothing planned.
