PARKRUN
It's 6am and v dark. We have awoken in our airbnb shipping container. Locate phone and search parkrun. 7am. Of course daylight saving adds confusion as I thought NSW park runs were at 8.
A quick stop for a heart starter coffee and then locate the cult members gathering.
And they were off. We were still trying to take off jumpers and stow phones. Near panic set in as Phoebe's jacket zip was stuck and we observed the tail walker had crossed the start line. Finally we were on our way with the singular objective to over take the tail walker.
4 ankle biters screamed past. A fellow we will call "tradie" appeared shortly after. As we walked, a consequence of travel flu and Phoebe's dodgy ankle, we observed tradie the shepherd keeping them together and encouraging extra effort from the stragglers. We offered to saddle magnus and put one of them on her but in a burst of energy the potential jockey sprinted into the distance.
The first of the runners appeared on the return leg and the ankle biters had a new challenge - to slow the buggers down.
We are about half way through the course and #1 runner has appeared. Turns he's dad to two of the ankle biters. I think "tradie"needs a dad-of-the-year award. Then two ladies appear on the horizon and one of the ankle biters scream past us arms outstretched.
The best part is this distraction put enough distance between us that we beat the ankle biters to the finish.
