Fish tank monitoring

It might be interesting to monitor chris's fish tank electronically.  I am thinking we need some sensors and then an interface box and finally some way to display the dat on the internet.

Then, how to measure? Absorbance of 530nm light is how it is done in some commercial meters. This is a green, and there are LEDs at this wavelength. You could ....
Syndetic has a very good optical absorbtion sensor.  We could install a suitable wavelength LED.

P1 Planking

So politically incorrect!

 This fad is so compeditiv.

Megan was a bit under the weather and the p1 program was a photo hunt so I went along to help with the outdoor stuff.  Megan came and did devotions and supper.

The challenge played out here was to take a photo related to public transport.  There was some concern among the leaders that creativity may lead to hopping on a passing train to get that winning photo and not getting off fast enough and then getting a phone call advising they were on an express to ipi.

John 14:15-21 (Good News Translation)

The Promise of the Holy Spirit
15 (A)If you love me, you will obey my commandments.16 I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, who will stay with you forever.17 He is the Spirit, who reveals the truth about God. The world cannot receive him, because it cannot see him or know him. But you know him, because he remains with you and is[a] in you.

18 When I go, you will not be left all alone; I will come back to you.19 In a little while the world will see me no more, but you will see me; and because I live, you also will live.20 When that day comes, you will know that I am in my Father and that you are in me, just as I am in you.

21 (B)
Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. My Father will love those who love me; I too will love them and reveal myself to them.

Oxfambulators

5:00 Rise & /shine. (It's dark)  Breaky and a shower.
5:40 depart pick up Clare, Bob & Ivan.
5:50 Arrive back home.  Megan and Erin join the bus.
6:00 Pick up Cybele and off and onward toward Mt Glorious.
Did I say it was raining yet they were still keen.
As we travel, Clare helps Megan tape up her toes.  I believe that this helps keep the toe nails when they drop off.
Arrive Mt Glorious and some final dressing.  I have to confess I was wondering whether some of the more experienced walkers had stumbeled onto something - Walking in ugh boots.  (I Now have a car full of ugh boots.)

To balance all this exercise, after I dropped them at Mt Glorious, I drropped into that nice little coffee shop down the road from Camp Constable and bought a coffee with bacon and eggs to help it down.

MEANWHILE

This was one very steep hill

you would think in this day and age that they would just hear that ever patient voice
"at the next tree turn right"

END OF THE DAY
The guys were relaxed and the walkers were stuffed

In preparation for their arrival we lit a fire.

Discussed health issues afflicting society and other politically correct topics

Then spurung into action as the walkers arrived,  Somewhat exhausted one might say.

Others would say "Only 40km"

Then a nice BBQ tea and home to bed.

Stop and Wait

It seems to me that there are all sorts off places where the powers that be have decided that, I think as a result of the summer rain, that subsidence is likely and so as a precaution they have blocked off half the road.  Perhaps the fear of litigation or media crucifiction in the event of an accident.

The red light symbolises it nicely.  STOP.

This is on the Corso at Yeronga.  The guard rail on the bridge has been knocked down or subsided or something.  So we block an entire lane and force the cars onto the wrong side of the road.  I wonder on balance what the liklihood of the road subsiding are compared to a head on collision.

And keeping with our risk averse society, we have to have a witches hat to make sure we dont trip over the glow in the dark warning sign.

Windows Deployment Software

Objective:
To find a software package that will help automate the installation of programs under wondows. A bit like the linux APT-GET function which automatically downloads and installs packages.
One solution would be a program where I entered a list of programs and the locations of their insallation files and copied my installation disks to various directories on a big hard disk.

Allmyapps
http://allmyapps.com/
Claim one click installation.  and amazingly it does it.  One creates a list "my list" and puts apps on it and then click install all.  Mind you I was glad I had installed AVG first because it blocked the installation of several toolbars to my web browser.

altiris
Symantec

automationanywhere
automationanywhere.com
$ $695.00

Appupdater
nabber.org
Appupdater-1.4.2.exe

ALEMEZA $US100
http://www.almeza.com
There is something in my Toshiba that is preventing this program from recoding the scripts. It works well on the Asus.

For this program, you have to download the disks or files yourself and then install each one once. It tracks the mouse and key presses. Then you can use the script files to automate reinstalls but obviously only of the same programs. I have not worked out how you export the script files. Nor can I work out what is stopping it working on the toshiba which is a real pain.

Cnet Techtracker $20 although there is a free version.
Note this claims
Selective or batch installs
So I paid my $20.
But I can not find out how to actually do this. I sent a email to Cnet.  The responded which is great.  BUT said sorry no it only does updating
NO batch installing.

Crambis Softwareupdater $25.20 interesting amount???
http://softwareupdater.carambis.com/Digitally signed as ROSTPAY???
Only updates. Now installation of new programs and only the programs that they have in their repository and no way to add more programs.

Desktop7 $300-700 BUT free for upto 25 puters. could be the thing for home!
http://www.manageengine.com
he download is common for free and trial editions. It will first install as a trial edition without any restriction for 30 days. After the trial period expires, it automatically gets converted to a free version, which can only manage up to 25 computers.

Freeaps
http://www.freenew.net
One click installation of freeware. Only from their list but a nice quick way to do it.

EMCO
http://emcosoftware.com/remote-installer
Freeware and $49

GETIT
puchisoft.com
http://puchisoft.com/GetIt/#final
The getit.exe Downloads appsnap and appupdater
Seems to get stuck. Has a dos window open that says "AttributeError: ImportResult instance has no attribute 'KEYEXPIRED'
And another window opened titled 'GetIt" and stating Updating Appupdater's Master Repository...
Finally got it going but many of the apps "fail to connect"

INSTALLPAD
http://installpad.com/applists
"InstallPad loads a file named applist.xml that resides in the same folder as the InstallPad executable. Applist.xml contains a list of applications that can be downloaded and installed. InstallPad is most useful when you customize this file to include your own applications. "

NINITE
http://ninite.com/
There is a free version but it seems we are limited to only the aps they support. But gee it looks like a great idea

QWINAPT
http://code.google.com/p/qwinapt/
I think it is also old and no longer supported

Software Informer
http://software.informer.com/
This program builds a list of programs on my computer then tells me what updates are available.
For new apps, it tries to provide a one click down load from the publishers web site but gets it wrong often enough that I end up just going to the poblishers web site anyway.
php for example.

Unattended
http://unattended.sourceforge.net/
Your network environment must meet the following requirements:
  • a DHCP server,
  • a DNS server,
  • a file-server that will host Unattended and all installation files. From now on, this server will be referred to as "Unattended server".
Ah nope. I do not have this. I may have but I was thinking stand alone pc with a huge USB hard disk.

RACQ Vito and a Kangaroo

Last Tuesday (Week ago) hit a Kangaroo on the way home from touch footie.  By the time we turned round, it had hopped away.

Phoned RACQ who advised the excess is $500.

How much could it be I wonder.  The head light and indicator bulbs no longer work and the plastic bumper bar is out of alignment with the plastic mud guard.

So off I go to ask a repair yard. Ha says the fellow.  It will be way over.  The headlight alone will be $500.  OK so I get the quote and off I go to the RACQ inspection and assesment centre.  Not being an regular at this I just rocked on up to the assesment centre.  Not a soul in sight.  So I picked up the phone in reception and was eventually advised by a friendly lady that I had to lodge a claim and make a booking.  She even offerred that I use a phone in the waiting lounge.  I figured that maybe I could do that and get the booking immediatly whereapon she advised that there were booked solid for 2 to 3 weeks.

This is a picture of that booked solid assesment centre.  You can see the teeming activity.

So I went back to the office to make that call.

Call RACQ claims on 137 202.  Interestingly can't dial by voip.
Spoke to 'Steph'
Megan needs to call to authorise claim.
Can't get assessed until 11am on 2-June-2011.
But can go for their "Metro Express" service which interestingly originates at the same over stretched assessment centre whereby they get their chosen repairer to do it.  And that can all start next week.
And we can get a rental car.
I guess one just has to go with the flow.

Toshiba U300 XP reinstall

My Toshiba U300 has become very very sloooow to boot and will hand when one right clicks on files in windows explorer (file manager).

A new 500GB hard disk was only $66 so I figured buy one and put it in and keep the old one as a back up. (I would have to back up somewhere.)
3pm
In goes the new HD and I put the recovery media in the laptop DVD drive.
Disk 1 then after a reasonable delay disk two and it gets stuck. Some kind error and so try a few more times.
Go home.
5pm
Try to use an external USB DVD drive.
The first disk would get stuck in an endless rebooting cycle.
Eventually succeeded in copying disk 2 on another PC and the copy would read in the internal drive and so we were able to luckilly get XP to install and run. Hopefully all the rest of the disks can come in via USB or network.
12am go to bed

I wish I could work out how to get some kind of automated installation process to occur.

8:00 am Tuesday

There it is and not we have to re boot.

Checked it is NTFS.

MS OFFICE
Tried to install Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010. Success. And outlook 2010 is working heaps faster than the old outlook and has found my mail on gmail. I was not so excited about the search function on Thunderbird so will give the new oulook another go.

And another 67 updates. At least that seems to happen automatically.

Blogger editor wont load - spinning issue

Grr frustration city.
Last night I tried to edit my blog on my net book (Windows 7) and the editor would not load. I was already feeling stresses / anoyed so I did not think straight and figured it was a problem with the netbook which was running rediculously slow anyway. So I downloaded a new version of firefox. Uninstalled the old version, deleted the entries under program files and installed the new version. No different.

Today I boot my laptop (XP) and the problem is there too. Then booted the virtual machine and ran firefox inside the VM (XP). Problem there too. Tried ie several times too.

Seach on google shows that people have been experiencing this for ages. So it sounds to me like the underlying cause has not been addressed. There are various blogs that suggest clearing caches etc.

Anyway, tried upating fireox to the latest - 4.01
Updated adobe flash to the latest.
Problem still there

WELCOME
Good Morning everyone...
This week we are having a "family" worship service.
We have tried very hard to plan a service that has something for everyone.
As you would have seen on the video screen as you came in we have some great traditional Hymns and some fun kids songs and some chorus's too.
Toward the middle of the service we will have some notices.  In fact straight after the second bible readinbg which comes from the gospel of John.  In those notices, I will not be going over the notices in the notice sheet which I think we will take as read.  However if there is something that you are pssionate about then please join me on the dais as soon as the notices start.  We have a full service and so please do not create delay by walking up to the dais.  If you are up here then I will invite you to speak and sprook your activity.

This service has a certain sheep theme and like sheep I invite you now to follow me as we journey through this time of worship.
Jemma is now going to lead us with an opening prayer.
------------------------------------------------------------------
INTRODUCTION TO TIS 156 MORNING HAS BROKEN
Last week Cec was talking about the disciples walking the road to Emmaus and then returning to Jeruselem. You may remember that he said that Jeruslem was East of Emaus and so as they walked toward Jeruslem they were walking toways the sun rise.  Symbolically they were walking towards a new sunrise a new start in their lives.  Just as today we are entering a new start in our lives.  Let us celebrate that new start by singing this great Hymn "Morning Has broken"

--------------------------------------------------------------
SERMON PT 1
AN INTRODUCTION TO SHEEP

Provide wool, meat,
Follow the leader
Seem to be pretty stupid.

Sheep feature a lot in the bible.  This is becaue they were a very important part of the society at the time.

But you know today, Sheep are not that important. How many of you have a sheep at home? (No one I expect).

So I figured we had better learn a bit about sheep so that we can understand what all these bible readings about sheep are supposed to mean to us today.

I figured that what we need is to talk to someone who used to be a sheep farmer and ask them to tell us a story about sheep.  Luckilly we have one right here in the Church.  (Cec comes up onto the dais).

Frank:  Cec, I believe you used to work on a sheep farm.
Cec :  That's right.
Frank:  You were telling me a fascinating story about some sheep following each other.  Would you tell the people here that story.
Cec:  .... tells story.

In biblical times, sheep were in smaller herds that we have here in Australia.

-------------------------------------
SERMON PART 2 - SHEERING SHEEP
On the way into church today you had to walk through a gate.
In the bible reading we heard Jesus described as the good Shepherd.

----------------------------------------------
OFFERING
Need to recruit 2 offering taker kids.
Need to recruit 2 Helpers with comunion
1.  Explain to congregation that we will be collecting the offering while we sing "TIS 685 The Power Of Your Love".
2.
One Isle - Estelle + Child ________
Other isle - Anne + Child (Bruce)
Walk to front with bowls.
Collect from the front going to the back. Child collects the outside bank of seats and adult does the centre while supervising the child.  Try to make sure that it all happens at the same time.
Teenager ________ to collect from the musos.
When the offering taker upperas reach the back, wait until both isles are ready.

At the back we should have by then 2 x Adults and 2 x kids who will help with communion.
Estelle + ______________
David + _____________

COMMUNION
Dan completes offering prayer

Sweeping Generalisations | Thoughts
A gate or smething that people walk through to get in ala the sheepfold.
The church can be a refuge where God protects us. ~ he is the shepherd.

Then by the end of the service we need to I think move on from the protection to the go out and be witnesses, gods hand and feet. How do we move from being "dumb sheep" to be fishes of men(people)....

It is hard enough trying to come up with a 'family service' that will be a worship experience for everyone.
We are a Church Family
We have families with kids.
No new songs, ie only sing songs that at least some of the congregation actually know.
Musos play melody for us simpletons.
Consider a message presented by both Cec and myself. In small bits so both the oldies, middle aged and the kids will all get something from it.
Do not want to give kids paper to colour in.
Kids sit with parents.

Lets start with a overall schedule
7:00 Breakfast starts
7:30 Most people arrive for breakfast
8:30 Rehersal / run through in church
9:00 Church Service Starts
10:00 End of Church Service
Morning tea
11:30 End of the mornings activities.

Detailed Schedule - Church
9:00

Lectionary Readings
(See below for the text of these readings)
Acts 2:42-47 - The Fellowship of the Believers. Breaking of break together.
Psalm 23 - The LORD is my shepherd
1 Peter 2:19-25 -Hmmm Suffering for your faith???
John 10:1-10 - Parable of the Shepherd
But what do they all mean and what do they have in common?

Other Interesting (or not) notes.
Fourth Sunday of Easter.
Colour is White
Ces has a video wrt hearding sheep.
Story wrt sheep following (Off the bridge, shaddow, lost sheep in the pasture)

Sheep
OK so two of the lectionary readings mention sheep (or at least allude to them by referring to shpherds.)
What is with sheep. The are dumb follow the leader animals that produce lamb chops and wool.
Sheep are portrayed as smarter than goats. Why?
Sheep follow and copy each other for no apparant reason.
Maybe sheep meant something to the people of the day but what does it mean to us now?
Shepherds care for sheep. Lead them. The fence is for their potection (Not so much to keep them in).
If sheep are so dumb and we are portrayed as sheep then maybe we arenot as smart as we would like to think we are and mybe God is much smarter and certainly more benevolent.

Acts 2:42-47 (New International Version, ©2011)

The Fellowship of the Believers
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Psalm 23

The Lord Our Shepherd[a]

The Lord is my shepherd;
I have everything I need.
2 (A)He lets me rest in fields of green grass
and leads me to quiet pools of fresh water.
3 He gives me new strength.
He guides me in the right paths,
as he has promised.
4 Even if I go through the deepest darkness,
I will not be afraid, Lord,
for you are with me.
Your shepherd's rod and staff protect me.

5 You prepare a banquet for me,
where all my enemies can see me;
you welcome me as an honored guest
and fill my cup to the brim.
6 I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life;

1 Peter 2:19-25 (Good News Translation)

19 God will bless you for this, if you endure the pain of undeserved suffering because you are conscious of his will.20 For what credit is there if you endure the beatings you deserve for having done wrong? But if you endure suffering even when you have done right, God will bless you for it.21 It was to this that God called you, for Christ himself suffered for you and left you an example, so that you would follow in his steps.22 (A)He committed no sin, and no one ever heard a lie come from his lips.23 (B)When he was insulted, he did not answer back with an insult; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but placed his hopes in God, the righteous Judge.24 (C)Christ himself carried our sins in his body to the cross, so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness. It is by his wounds that you have been healed.25 You were like sheep that had lost their way, but now you have been brought back to follow the Shepherd and Keeper of your souls.

John 10

The Parable of the Shepherd
1 Jesus said,
I am telling you the truth: the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber.2 The man who goes in through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him; the sheep hear his voice as he calls his own sheep by name, and he leads them out.4 When he has brought them out, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice.5 They will not follow someone else; instead, they will run away from such a person, because they do not know his voice.
6 Jesus told them this parable, but they did not understand what he meant.
Jesus the Good Shepherd
7 So Jesus said again,
I am telling you the truth: I am the gate for the sheep.8 All others who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.9 I am the gate. Those who come in by me will be saved; they will come in and go out and find pasture.10 The thief comes only in order to steal, kill, and destroy. I have come in order that you might have life—life in all its fullness.

CHURCH BREAKFAST
I did hear someone or other advertising a challenge called live below the line
http://www.livebelowtheline.com.au/
The challenge is to live on $2 per day for a week.
This somehow helps hungry third world people.
Now I can't even get a cup of coffee for $2 so I have no idea how to achieve this.
Personally I think the solution helping to starving Africans is to trade with them. (Buy food I guess from them) But that is just me.
Did that put you off breakfast. ????
BTW, if you are doing the challenge, let me know and I will sponsor you and let me know how you achieve it without starving. Maybe we shoudl starve a bit. Hmmmmm $2 bucks a day. I don't reckon it can be done.

Let there be light - not

Figured I needed to buy lights for the kids beds.  A simple task one might think.  Alas it would appear not at Big W, Target or K-mart.

The specification is quite simple
Produces light
Clips to bed head
has a switch

Some additional spec's that would be nice
LED - so we can pretend we are green.
Plugs into power - So we don't have to deal with batteries.

These clip on desk lamps are similar to what I am looking for.  Except that desks are horizontal and bead heads are vertical.

Go Card oops

Sometime back I had to resort to buying a Go Card.  Then for our little trip to the city (see below) with the kids, we used our go cards and oops on the way home forgot to touch off.  So we were charged the default fee.

Adult (me) City to Oxley normally $3.68 charged $5.00

Kids Normally $1.84 charged $2.50

So I figure lets see if we can get a refund.  To do this I had to register the card.  Done OK pretty easy at translink.com.au.

Now I look at my card and I see right from the first use, I have gotten it wrong.  Seems I touched on and off within a few seconds.  So my very first trip to Central cost $5.00 instead of $3.68.  Short changed by $1.32
.
Then we have two successful trips.  Then the problem trip on Friday.

So we will request a refund.  Mind you it does seem so inefficient. Who would create a system that is so easy to cock up.  But I suspect that this system is here to stay.  Given that it is the same system as is used in Hong Kong and London.  But wouldn't it be so much easier if we just used our mobile phones or heaven forbid a paper ticket.
