ANZAC Service - Oxley

Oxley ANZAC march.

Jemma marched with the guides.  Megan, Chris, Dan and I watched and then walked alongside.  I brought Lucy who met several other Dogs who she wanted to make friends with.

This is quite a casual march. At the appointed hour a cop car blocks outbound traffic and the marchers step off the kerb and onto the road. The traffic keeps flowing in the other direction. So low key. And who do we see in the middle. Ensuring a Grammarian presence. None other than Mr Angus Blackwood.

The service following the march had multiple hymns (as distinct from the Corinda service that had none ) and we sang God Save The Queen. When was the last time you sang that?

It was nice to see a large croud.

We marched around the block. Prayer, Speech, ode, last post, silence, NZ & Aus National Anthems.

We remember that many have died protecting our nation. Some times it seems so futile but we need to remember that we have our free way of life because of the sacrifice of people who have gone before us.

 Lest we forget!

Uni Citycat terminal on the move

I was walking from the West End Citycat terminal when I saw this.

This is the Uni Citcat terminl being towed up river.  The first bit with a roof is the bit where the boats tie up to.  The grey bit behind it, is I think, the walkway that connects the pontoon part to the land.

Fix Boat Light

This is a light off a rowing boat.  The lights are required because it is dark when we set out in the early morning.

Water has gotten into this light.  You can see droplets on the batteryy and inside the cover section in the lower half of the picture.

It is interesting to note that water has gotten in despite the light being fitted with an O-Ring seal and it has had some silastic added.

I dried it out with paper towel and then Megan's hair dryer.  Then I changed the batteries.  The old batteries were Powertech NiMH.  I used Aldi NiMH.  $16 (I think) much cheaper than Jaycar.

Note below the PCB is quite corroded. Unlike another light I fixed recently (#5), #5 had been conformally coated and although there was much more gunk inside light #5 because a battery had leaked, the PCB was pretty much undamaged.

The underside of the light.

The Velcro is used to hold the light onto the boat.

The two pins at the bottom are used to recharge the batteries.

When I reassembled the light, I ditched the "O" Ring for a couple of reasons.  It's a square cross section and the rubber was very hard and I suspect it did little to seal the unit.

Use Silastic to reseal the unit.  There is no guarantee that this will work because someone had used some silastic before me and yet water had still gotten in.

I also put Silastic inside the unit around where the DC power pins come in.

In the picture below, you can see the bead of silastic squeezed out as the lid was screwed on.

Chris Rowing at SIRC

Chris is down in Sydney.  He is the reserve for the Queensland youth pathway 8.  Most of the other kids are grade 12 (Chris is Gr11) so this is a wonderful achievement for him.  Hopefully enjoyable and great experience for next year.

Stan -> Whip It Movie Review

I am doing a one month free trial of a video and TV streaming service called Stan.
stan.com.au
It's similar to the more well known netflix.

Last night watched "Whip It".
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1172233/
Directed by none other than the cute little girl from ET - Drew Barrymore.  Multi talented?

This movie is one of those coming of age movies.  The vehicle is Roller Derby which is basically girls on roller skates chasing each other round a track.  Turns out the title "Whip It" is a Roller Derby pre-set play that is used to gain a tactical advantage where one player grabs the hand of the other and catapults them along the track at an accelerated speed.

I thought it was a good movie.  Raw enough to be interesting and nice enough to be ... well nice.
The girl is trying to rebel and find herself and all that.  Mum has mum's passion, which being America, is putting the girl in beauty pageants.  Who wouldn't rebel against that! It makes for a contrast point for the movie.

Of course we have to have some rebellion and some learning points.  So the girl lies to a few people (parents, team mates, girl friend) but in the end all the lies are found out with the inevitable heartache that accompanies such indiscretions.

In nice little sub plot, mother has to deal with her own separation issues.  ie getting over the fact that daughter is not into pageants but the daughter actually is willing to forgo the big grand final race to please mum by participating in the pageant.  Oh so nice.

There is another nice scene where the daughter discovers dad hiding in his van drinking beer and watching footie.   Daughter (who is 17 btw) asks dad for a beer and he says she can't have her own but can have a sip of his.  An oh so nice compromise.

Cathedral and Bells

This is Part 2 of the Saturday activities remembering and celebrating mum and dad's life.

After the service at Toowong Cemetery was complete, Chris & I high tailed it to Paddington Hardware where finally we managed to procure a couple of brass round head screws. Even then they had to rummage around in old draws for them.

At the Cathedral, we were taken on a fascinating tour up spiral stair cases and along a walkway above the main body of the Cathedral.

The Bellringers have a web site:
http://www.northerntowers.org/
Have a look.  They would love new people to come and try.

Lewis & Rodney.

We wound or way up narrow spiral stairs. Had a look out of a verandah. Observed a couple of people down across the road had set up tripods to take the perfect picture of St John's. We waved. They indicated they would like us to go away. Once at the top we walked along a walkway that runs above the ceiling to the base of the bell tower.

Frank & Dan.
The door takes us to the spiral stair case in the South West entry tower.

This is the view from the walkway above the cathedral looking down on the vaulted ceiling of the cathedral.  To the left we see the actual roof that keeps out the rain.

the guide, presumably in fear of the workplace health and safety god, gave us strict instructions not to touch the ropes. The bells live face up. This is a very unstable position and a small tug on the rope could over balance them. Because there were too many of us we had to go up in two groups. While up looking at he bells we were warned to stay away from them to ensure we did not bump them or be near them should a recalcitrant pull on a rope.

Mum's be is the bell in the centre of the picture.

After everyone had had a look we went back to the bell ringer room. The hatch was closed and we were given the nod to pull on selected ropes.

When this musical trip was over the guides carefully returned several bells to the down position. This meant we could go back into the bell room and install the plaque.

Frank installed a plaque.

Eileens Ashes Internment

Today we had a small service commemorating mum's life and the attachment of plaques for Mum and Dad at Toowong cemetery.

The day started looking for Lucy.

Chris,  Henry and I left early and went via Corinda hardware in search of round or pan head brass wood screws. These seem very hard to get.

Arrived early at Toowong cemetery to install Dad's plaque.  Discovered screw holes were placed such that it was nowhere near straight. Used one screw and some GAF.

Megan began with playing & singing.

It was a beautiful sunny day.

David Thomas officiated. Henry had put together a order of service booklet.  Each of us read a few words. There was a bowl with water in it that David blessed and then we used gum branch to dip in and flick the water onto the headstones.

We also blessed the plaque that was to be installed at the cathedral.

The service concluded with the singing of hymn XYZ.  Jemma on ? accompanied Megan in playing.

After the service was complete Megan produced morning tea which was very kind of her.

Symbolism of water -
Chris asked the significance of thr water. I was at a loss to give a prepackaged answer.

water symbolises life and cleansing.

Blessings makes it "holy".

Preparing for the Internment of Eileen's ashes

Megan cooked and cooked a magnificent feast.  Henry and Frank assisted.

About a month ago I had dropped the plaques in along with mum's ashes.

On Thursday I picked up Henry from the airport and we dropped into the Toowong cemetery to check on the installation of the plaques.  We established that the Toowong people kindly dug a hole & dropped in the urn containing mums ashes and installed a concrete plinth with mums plaque.  However dad's plaque was a task too hard.  They promised to get right onto it.

On Friday, Henry went riding on his bike.  Along the way he called into the Cemetery again.  The workers were stymied so Henry repossessed Dad's plaque and dropped it into my work.  We cut off the mounting lugs on the back

Easterfest 2015 4 - Bush Dance, Tech Crew

This is the main walkway.  The rain early on the weekend combined with hundreds of feed churned up the mud.  A couple of vehicles were just the icing on the [mud] cake.

Much of the electrical crew.  Dan & I really have only done an insignificant amount of work compared to most of these guys.  Most of them have been at the festival setting up for a week before, all through and then for almost a week after.  I have only done a day before and a day (today) after.

See the ute...

This is our container over behind "The Palace".  See Dan's bed.

Megan wanted a Labyrinth
https://labyrinthsociety.org/
This is a track along which one walks while contemplating moral and spiritual issues.  A common initial reaction is that it is a maize but in fact there is only one track.  The entry and the exit are the same and of course if many people are walking the track then those one the way out meet those on the way in.
