BA Falcon Gearbox Issues

The LCD on the dash constantly indicates "D" irrespective of the position of the shift leaver.
Now when one starts the engine is cold,
the speedo goes to full speed momentarilly.
There are some sharp beeps
The gear position LCD flashes -> means in limp home mode I believe.
The vehicle has no guts (I assume this is limp home mode)

TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL ?   - OK
This web site shows how to check the fluid level in the automatic transmission.
http://autofix.com.au/blog/falcon-4-speed-auto-fluid-level-check
The vehicle is supposed to be level for this check.  I was a bit naughty and had the car slightly higher at the front than the back.  I was expecting the fluid level to be very low.  However as soon as I took the bolt out, fluid started to run out.  So I concluded the problem is NOT LOW Fluid.

I did note a lot of oil is on the front of the tail shaft.  There must be something else between the gear box and the tail shaft that has leaked oil.

DTC = Diagnostic Trouble Code
VSS = Vehicle Speed Sensor  (see here to see a picture)
PCM
ECM = Engine Control Module
TCM = Transmission Control Module

======================

Connected Ross' OBD2 Bluetooth dongle.

P0500
Type Powertrain - Vehicle Speed, Idle Control, and Auxiliary Inputs - ISO/SAE Controlled
Description Vehicle Speed Sensor Fault Conditions
Cause Engine running, engine speed above the TCC stall speed, then the PCM detected a loss of the VSS signal over a period of time The PCM receives a VSS signal from the VSS, TCSS, ABS Module, GEM or CTM (central timer module)

P0708 (Ford) =
Powertrain - Transmission
Description =
DTR or TR Sensor Circuit High Conditions
Cause =
Engine running, then the PCM detected that the DTR or TR sensor signal was over its minimum
P0826= Powertrain - Transmission
Up and Down Shift Switch Circuit High

P0828= Powertrain - Transmission
Up and Down Switch Switch Circuit

VSS = Vehicle Speed Sensor

From Ford Forums

C13= Vehicle speed sensor.  C300 = EEC-A Which I think the the ECU.

This picture shows the VSS.  Look for the little red wire middle right.

Also shows the oil leaking out.

I do not think this is coming from the transmission as the transmission oil is very full.

Disconnected the VSS (Connector near Gearbox connector).  Just pull hard (not on the wires)
Cleared faults
P5000 code vanished and has not come back
Reconnected VSS.  Still no VSSP5000 code.
I suspect that there maybe oil in the connector right at the sensor.
I suspect the P5000 code is not associated with the other issues.

Is it possible to measure voltages on wires going into the ECU and see whether the signals are at the levels expected?
