The cost of rowing

I have taken up rowing as a hobby.  I generally enjoy it and certainly enjoy it when I am out on the water.  It serves as a good motivator to get fit and keep fit.

We have had a bit of a shakeup in our crew this year with two of our best rowers moving to better crews in our club.  A by product of this is that I have inherited the role of 'whip' for the Gen-D crew.  Right now I have to say I am finding that energy sapping.  We have 12 names on our list and often can only gather 5 and so I have to get 3 subs to make 8.  That is a whole lot of effort.

I would also say that I regret not putting my hand up for the performance crew.  Not that I would have gotten into it but the selection process would have been good for my fitness and strength.  At the time though I had a hit of the flu etc and was not firing.  Anyway.

That is the emotional cost. Now onto the financial cost....

Having just gone through the 30 June end of financial year thing, Megan and I started to talk investments etc.  So I started to look at what I spend.
Club fees are pretty much the same as any club - About $800 for the year.
The real surprise was when I added up what I spend on coffee.  I will have coffee $4 plus something - Banana bread at Albertos or Omelet at The Mango tree Cafe. With 3 x rows per week that is say $30.
x 4 weeks per month - $120 per month x 12 months = $1500.  Its actually I think more than that because I often go and do a work out on the non rowing days and have at least a coffee and usually the toast too.

The real kicker is the cost of coffee.

Total expenditure is about $5k for the year.

One has to ask is that good

There are some other costs.  I am looking at buying a rowing machine ~$1200.  The goal at the end of the year is the Head Of The Yarra (HOTY).  That involves airfares & hotel acomodation.

So far the focus has been on cost.

The benefits are:
1. Physical fitness
2. Mental well being -Nice to work out and socialise with others.
3. Alertness at work - Although we must ask if that can simply be achieved with a mug of Nescafe.
