What does 700C mean in bike tires?
700C is used to refer to any tire, rim, or wheel with a 622mm BSD,
but it could be on a skinny-tired road bike where the wheel has an
actual diameter of only 660mm (which is actually a little LESS than 26
inches!), or a mountain bike with a wheel diameter of over 29 inchesWent to K-mart. They had tyres and tubes for $5. Hmm me thinks.
Went to Giant and asked about how tyre sizes match up rim sizes. And tyres. Their tyres started at $50.
Went back to K mart and bought some.
At home the reason for $5 quickly became clear. These were called "folding" tyres. I suspect the packaging department controlled the specification. Well neigh impossible to get on the rim. Not because of size. Just because so floppy. No bead.
Finally got it on.
Connected the pump.
Put a bit of air in.
Massaged the tyre in case the tube had any folds or kinks.
Bit more air. Another massage.
Continued until firm.
Checked pressure marking on tyre 60-75psi.
Began to pump.
Watched the gauge.
Pretty much on the dot of 60psi there was an insane bang. I almost had a heart attack.
Tyre off rim and big rip in the tube.
I think what happened was the tyre stretched and when it finally came clear of the rim it could not contain the tube.
