Stan -> Whip It Movie Review

I am doing a one month free trial of a video and TV streaming service called Stan.
stan.com.au
It's similar to the more well known netflix.

Last night watched "Whip It".
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1172233/
Directed by none other than the cute little girl from ET - Drew Barrymore.  Multi talented?

This movie is one of those coming of age movies.  The vehicle is Roller Derby which is basically girls on roller skates chasing each other round a track.  Turns out the title "Whip It" is a Roller Derby pre-set play that is used to gain a tactical advantage where one player grabs the hand of the other and catapults them along the track at an accelerated speed.

I thought it was a good movie.  Raw enough to be interesting and nice enough to be ... well nice.
The girl is trying to rebel and find herself and all that.  Mum has mum's passion, which being America, is putting the girl in beauty pageants.  Who wouldn't rebel against that! It makes for a contrast point for the movie.

Of course we have to have some rebellion and some learning points.  So the girl lies to a few people (parents, team mates, girl friend) but in the end all the lies are found out with the inevitable heartache that accompanies such indiscretions.

In nice little sub plot, mother has to deal with her own separation issues.  ie getting over the fact that daughter is not into pageants but the daughter actually is willing to forgo the big grand final race to please mum by participating in the pageant.  Oh so nice.

There is another nice scene where the daughter discovers dad hiding in his van drinking beer and watching footie.   Daughter (who is 17 btw) asks dad for a beer and he says she can't have her own but can have a sip of his.  An oh so nice compromise.
