Australian set in 1960 ish.
Near Ballarat (I think)
Boys and girls boarding school on opposite sides of a lake.
Interesting character study.
The boy who gets the girl is not the Captain of the footie team. He's a arty kid into history and poetry.
Most of the focus is on the boys and their interactions.
A few scenes looking at girl interaction
The
girls dress up for a dance. As they pull their dresses over their
underwear, their eyes linger on each other. Checking each other out.
More so than I think boys would of the other boys.
Right at the end, two girls hug and say good by to the Ugandan girl with tears in their eyes. Two
other girls look on.
The
classic scene of boys peaking through a hole in the wall watching the
girls get changed. This is more of a boys scene because one of the
"alpha" boys takes a photo and the main character intervenes. This
results in a punch up. An interesting comment on where the line between OK (boys being boys) and being creepy and these days seen as stalking
bordering on bullying / sexting was recognised even in the 1960's.
My recollection on the way the movie was shot is that for the first 90% of the movie, most of the footage is framed fairly close. To me this reflects the teenage world where teens live in a small self focused world. For example, The footie match at the beginning is filed close. All the action takes place in boarding house. No school perspective.
At the end, the coming of age is reflected in the movie showing lots of world news big picture stuff.
