Windows 7 Problems reading USB flash drives

Our fancy game computer has problems reading some USB memory sticks.
Its a Intel Core I7
Windows 7 64 bit
12GB ram and 2TB hard drive
and yet sometimes when one plugs in a USB flash drive, it will not read it.  The problem is not an 'intermittant' problem.  Some drives are good and will always work and some are bad and they can never be read (or written).  I first noticed this at Easterfest when we had a number of people bringing media on USB drives.  The latest issue to appear is the machine does not have a SD card reader and so I tried to use my Swann SD to USB adapter but it will not load either.

1.  Ran windows update and told it to install every conceivable upadet (there was 1 important and 4 ordinary updtaes listed) - Does not seem to have made any difference.

What to do next?
