The Macbook Air comes preloaded with the Mac OS (whatever that is called). And for all the hype about Apples, there is a certain comfort in using the Windows we know although it seems that with every new Apple product they make it more intuitive to use and somehow Microsoft do the opposite in that every new thing is harder to use than the last. The "ribbon" in MS Office being a typical example.
So the plan is:
a) Make the apple dual bootable with Windows 7. This would allows Windows to run natively and therefore at full speed on the Mac hardware.
b) Then install Parallels which as I understand is a virtual machine that runs on the mac and windows will run inside and at the same time as the Mac OS. Apparently by installing Windows natively, parallels picks up the native install and somehow ingests it into the virtual machine.
Lets get started.
1. Downloaded an ISO image of Windows 7. This is temporarily on the mac hard disk.
2. Purchased a 8GB USB stick $10.
3. Inserted said USB memory stick in the apple. First hiccup, I need to format it in Mac format.
On the Mac desktop, I click "Launchpad" Then "Disk Utility" & Choose the "Partition" tab.
That tells me it is 7.74GB formatted in FAT.
I chose Format: Mac OS Extended (Journald). Name: MACWIN7.
Then clicked the "Erase" button. It seems no "OK" button. I missed it. It took all of 5 seconds.
4. Create the Boot disk
Launchpad>Boot Camp Assistant
Continue, Continue,
Choose navigate and click on the WIN7 ISO.
5. Partitioned Mac hard disk. 20GB for windows. (The computer prompted for this and it all seemed to work very easily)
6. Windows installation started up. -> Disk 0 Partition 4 BOOTCAMP
