Henry's record

Euro ski 2024

13 - 16 February 2024

The long journey begins. But I will keep the words brief 😂.

No airline dramas compared to six months earlier. The three flights needed to get to Milan departed and arrived on time! A quick trip from Canberra to Brisbane where I met my brother Frank Thomson. Then to Dubai. For a 14 hour flight things went smoothly. Belgium waffles (among other things) along with showers in the lounge at Dubai killed the time.

A couple of days in Milan allowed a look at the Dumno (cathedral) and buildings in the centre. An early night punctured by being wide awake at 1am is pretty expected but what do you do.

Jumped on metro to look around at various sites just out from the old town. More a walking around rather than look into the many and various museums co-located on site. The architecture of the place was good enough for me. We had pre-arranged tickets to Leanardo’s Last Supper painting/fresco. Lots of interpretations and stories. It’s taken me six or more visits to Milan to get to see this.

Went in search of lunch which resulted in a metro to the Dumno and then a terrace restaurant overlooked by the Cathedral (which we saw the day before).

Then more metro riding to Basicila of Saint Ambrose. Plain compared to what I’ve seen elsewhere in Italy. I like the simplicity.
Rob Thomson arrived and we headed to an evening meal of seafood.

Train from Milan to Verona in Business Class. About and hour 15. Smooth. Lunch in Verona and walked around to see Juliet”s house and balcony before walking over the historic Ponte Pietra (stone) bridge (100BC). Then past the Roman amphitheater and up the steep hill overlooking the old centre of Verona. Sun was not in the best position and the day was especially hazy. Then walked to the red brick Scaliger Bridge (1354) and the Tower of Castelvecchio.

Amy Thomson and Mike arrived. Pre dinner Select Spritz in the square beside the Roman amphitheater. Dinner at a very nice Michelin restaurant chosen by Rob.
