In times past, pigeons used for
1 food
2 fertiliser
3 messaging.
Humans would build a cave then block up the door leaving small openings for the pigeons.
This provided a safe place for the pigeons against predators. Also the humans can collect the poo for fertiliser.
For communication, you'd first train your pigeon over small distances and then larger ones. Eventually when it was good enough, you'd swap it with someone far away. Then you could send each other one message.
Far fewer pigeons now than when the humans were living in the caves.
